  • Extend IRIS (manufacturing and maintenance) certification to the Riom and Batesburg production sites and to the Genoa site (design)

  • The Knowledge Owners programme was launched in 2014 as the second part of the Ansaldo STS talent development model
  • Project Team Effectiveness: strong empowerment project for the design teams and system to assign objectives and rewards in line with the teams' success expectations
  • 10 international teams were involved and had to deliver strategic projects after being given group coaching sessions
THE ENVIRONMENT, HEALTH AND SAFETY
  • Achieve the objectives of the environmental, health and safety plans of ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certified sites 
  • The plans for environmental and safety improvements had the following objectives:
    - reducing energy consumption (2015): result achieved, consumption down 3% in 2014
    - reducing CO2 emissions for travel between sites: result achieved, 4.2% reduction in the number of kms travelled
    - reducing the production of non-hazardous waste from packaging: result achieved. The production of mixed packaging was decreased by 17% and was fully recycled in 2014
    - reducing hazardous waste: result not achieved due to the reorganisation of the warehouses with elimination of chemical products used to build prototypes 
  • Extend environmental certification (Kuala Lumpur Office and Kuala Lumpur Factory) and health and safety certification (Pittsburgh and Ontario) to all sites
  • Health and safety certification for the Pittsburgh and Ontario was obtained. The Kuala Lumpur Office is undergoing change at organisational level and the internal areas are being reorganised. Therefore, its certification has to be rescheduled.
  • Define eco-design activities to reduce C02 emissions 
  • The eco-design activities were identified with the engineering and development department
  • Print portable mini-handbooks on the application of company procedures (published on the intranet)
  • The objective was met for implementation of the minihandbooks for the Australian sites, the other sites have a special intranet section and a handbook for emergencies and first aid in the production areas is being published.
  • Reschedule the training and internal information campaign on environmental issues for 2014
  • All employees took part in environmental training days about the related legislation and management aspects.
  • Evaluate the application tools for environmental reporting on offices and sites
  • Evaluation of the application tools for environmental and safety reporting has not yet been completed as the company had to identify a tool that meets the requirements of all the sites, work sites and projects.
  • Selection and application of one of the following initiatives: creation of an environmental portal; inclusion of a footprint calculator on the site: conventions for visits to national parks, natural history museums or to purchase green products; voluntary reforestation projects
  • One of the initiatives proposed and accepted by the internal sustainability committee was to create an environmental portal. The issues to be posted are still being discussed
SUPPLY CHAIN  
  • Define, discuss and implement the medium/long-term supply chain sustainability policy and roadmap
  • Participation in the TenP project of the Global Compact Network Italy Foundation, of which Ansaldo STS is a founding member, and roll out of the activities to involve suppliers in defining an action plan to improve their sustainability towards respect for human rights, labour conditions, the environment and anticorruption
  • Make assessment tools more accessible to suppliers, to share rating results and launch a virtuous improvement cycle
  • Completion of the tool for the automated creation of supplier rating reports. Test started in France and the tool was sent to suppliers in January 2014
  • Support stakeholders' focus on the SUDA (Supplier Database) as a generator of internal and external value
  • Training programme for the supply chain department and quality department completed
  • Complete the integration of the general supply terms with sanctions clauses for code of ethics violations and align the terms with regulations and international best practices
  • Updated and published the general conditions of the tender package for Italy (document MNL045) including the sanctions clauses for code of ethics violations
THE MEDIA AND SUSTAINABILITY COMMUNICATIONS
  • Present and expand the vision of sustainability throughout Ansaldo: organise an event to present the Sustainability Report
  • The planned event was not held but the group of employees aware of these issues has grown thanks to their involvement in preparing the report and its circulation
  • Complete the work begun for the digital media and improve the website
  • Digital communication is an increasingly important PR tool. Indeed, some social media professionals have seen a big jump in this form of communication during the year.
  • Consolidate and develop relationships with the domestic and foreign media
  • It was not possible to step up relations with foreign media but new actions were taken towards year end and new objectives set 
COMMUNITY  
  • ITALIAN AND EUROPEAN INSTITUTIONS: continue with the Italian and European research projects that are underway to increase safety, security and environmental compatibility and apply for funding by coordinating new project proposals
The ongoing Italian and European research projects were continued and the company pledged greater commitment, especially for safety (CRYSTAL project) and energy efficiency (MERLIN, OSIRIS and SFERE projects). New projects approved in 2014 to be coordinated by Ansaldo STS are the NEMBO, MODISTA and ERSAT EAV projects. Ansaldo STS is a founding member of Shift2Rail, which will become active in 2015
  • UNIVERSITIES: continue contributing to specialised training in the sector by collaborating with leading Italian and foreign universities and contributing scientifically to post-graduate master programmes
  • Ansaldo STS participated in the Level II University Master programme in Infrastructural and Railway System Engineering with the La Sapienza University of Rome
  • Funded three scholarships for the Embedded System in Critical Domains project
  • Training and internships as part of the project to reform technical high schools (ITS)

  • TRADE ASSOCIATIONS: continue to play an active role in trade associations
  • In 2014, Ansaldo STS continued to pay an active role in trade associations. In particular, it joined UNIFE's Sustainable Transport Committee
  • COMMUNITY: continue to support social and cultural initiatives promoted by non-profit associations and institutions
  • Each year sees Ansaldo STS committed in various charitable events and sponsorships to fund cultural and humanitarian initiatives. In 2014, total donations and sponsorships amounted to roughly €270 thousand
